Piastri was originally supposed to make his F1 debut with the Alpine team. However, as he was unsure for a long time whether he would actually find a competitive race car with the French, he fled to McLaren, where he replaced Daniel Ricciardo. His junior series stats were impressive—Formula Renault Eurocup champion in 2019, FIA F3 champion in 2020 and Formula 2 champion in 2021.
He did not disappoint in his debut season in F1 in 2023. Although he mostly lost out to teammate Lando Norris, the young Australian managed to score two podiums and in Qatar, even winning a sprint race—something that even Norris failed to do.
In 2024, Oscar Piastri confirmed his immense potential with his first two Grand Prix victories and an impressive fourth place in the drivers’ championship. However, he continued to struggle to consistently match Norris over a race distance, particularly in qualifying and tire management. Still, his upward trajectory is undeniable.
Will 2025 be the year he steps out of Norris’s shadow and establishes himself as a genuine title contender?
